Your most interesting projects / accomplishments?

Among my most interesting projects and accomplishments, the one that stands out is the development of a National Measure for Predictable Public Transport in New Zealand.  This project laid the foundation for producing an aggregate measure of predictable journeys across different travel modes and regions in New Zealand. The Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) project was another highlight, wherein I developed an early congestion detection system for improving real-time traffic management. Using innovative AI and machine learning techniques, I achieved noteworthy progress in estimating traffic volume for Auckland's entire city, a major step towards smart and efficient city planning. However, the most rewarding experience has been nurturing and fostering the growth of my team members. Witnessing their career progression and shared passion for innovation in traffic engineering and data science has been an invaluable accomplishment.

What you love most about your job?

What I love most about my job is the opportunity to blend analytical rigor with real-world problem solving. I deeply enjoy the process of dissecting complex traffic patterns and transport issues, then applying innovative data science methodologies to find sustainable solutions. Equally rewarding is the chance to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where every project presents a chance to learn something new. But perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of my job is the opportunity to mentor my team members. Seeing them grow professionally, contribute meaningfully to our projects, and achieve their personal goals gives me immense satisfaction.

Why you followed this career path?

I chose to follow this career path due to a profound interest in how systems work, particularly transport systems, and the role that data plays in making them more efficient. The complexities of traffic patterns and public transportation mechanisms have always fascinated me, and the potential to improve them through the use of data science felt like an exciting challenge. Moreover, I was drawn to the immense potential of this field in positively influencing urban planning, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life. Also, the prospect of working on a wide range of projects, from local initiatives to national strategies, and being able to make tangible contributions to society was deeply appealing.

Your interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of activities including reading, especially books related to data science and AI, and historical novels. I am passionate about outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, which provide a refreshing escape from the daily routine. I also love traveling, exploring new cultures and cuisines. These hobbies allow me to unwind and keep a balanced perspective on life.

What or who motivates you?

What truly motivates me is the potential to make a positive impact on people's lives through my work. The ability to leverage data science and traffic engineering to improve public transportation, decrease congestion, and enhance urban living standards is profoundly fulfilling. Furthermore, I'm motivated by the ever-evolving nature of technology and the opportunity it presents for continuous learning and innovation. On a personal level, my team members inspire me with their dedication and enthusiasm, driving me to strive for excellence in my role.

Who do you love to work with?

I love working with people who are passionate, driven, and open-minded. These individuals often bring innovative ideas to the table and possess the determination to see these ideas through. I appreciate collaborators who understand the importance of data and its potential to transform how we approach problems in transportation and urban planning. Additionally, I enjoy working with those who foster a culture of learning and growth, where mistakes are seen as opportunities to improve and every challenge is viewed as a chance to innovate. Lastly, I value team members who respect and appreciate the diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and skills each person brings to the team.
